Practicing with the Sample Software

Practicing with the Sample Software

The sample software is available to familiarize yourself and your team with how the Director software will work. The sample software is not branded for your school and does not contain your graduate data.

The below are tasks that you and your team should practice prior to receiving your school branded software from Tassel.

To practice, you will need:
  1. QR scanner
  2. Laptop
  3. Sample graduate cards
  4. Sample “blank” graduate cards

Important for Spring 2025
Before you download and install the newest director application, please remember to uninstall all previous MarchingOrder Director software versions from your computer. For more detailed instructions on how to do this, click here

Download the Director sample software and database

Download the Director setup app

  1. Plug in a QR code scanner directly to your computer’s USB port.
  2. On your Hub, open the task titled Director Sample Software.
  3. Click on the FIRST hyperlink to access the Director Sample Software.
  4. This will bring you to a Box folder: Click the three dots to the right of the zipped file named Director Setup.zip.
  5. Select download.
  6. Unzip the package - this can remain in your downloads folder and does not need to move to your desktop.
  7. Open the unzipped folder to install the Director application.
    1. After installation, you should see the application listed in the Windows Start menu and as an icon on your desktop. Do not access this icon to run the application. The initial install is now complete and the software will automatically close. You will not access the setup again.

Download and run the Director sample database

  1. Click on the SECOND hyperlink: "Click here to download the Director Sample Database".
  2. This will bring you to a Box folder: Click the three dots to the right of the zipped file named Tassel Sample Database.zip.

Select Download, and unzip the folder
  1. Note - this no longer needs to remain on your desktop, however we recommend placing it here for ease of access.
  2. The Director database should not be run from any cloud drive, shared folder, thumb drive or external hard drive.
This folder contains a System folder and the new TasselDirector.moddb, with a blue icon. Open this file.

Start practicing using the sample cards

Ensure scanner(s) are properly calibrated

In order for you scanner to work with Director, they must be calibrated for serial mode. The software will indicate weather your scanner is calibrated correctly.

Open/print sample cards or stage passes

  1. Within the same Box folder as the Sample Software, you will find PDFs for sample blank cards, stage cards and stage passes.
  2. You can click on the PDFs to print, open, and scan from your computer, or email them out as needed to scan from a mobile device.
We suggest practicing using the same methods that your graduates will use during the ceremony.

Edit sample graduate data in Help Desk

Click into the Help Desk center. This is where any last minute updates to graduate data can be made. Admins can add new graduates or modify existing graduate data. Keep in mind, for ceremonies that include audio announcements, recorded audio of graduate names cannot be altered, but graduates can choose to have their names live read instead.

Add a new graduate

  1. A “New graduate” will need a sample blank card – at your event, you’ll want to print the preferred name on the card. For practice purposes, this can be skipped.
  2. Click Add New Participant from within the Help Desk.
  3. Type the new name that would be written on the blank graduate card, along with a sample degree title or honors.
  4. Then click Save. Follow the on-screen prompt to scan the QR code of the blank card. Once scanned, press Save again.
  5. You can confirm that the new sample graduate was added by searching for them within the Help Desk or by scanning the blank card in Ceremony Display mode.

Modify a graduate

  1. Select any graduate from the list or search for the name “Edward” in the search bar. Click the graduate name, then select Modify Participant.
  2. The graduates data will appear on the right side of the screen. Update the name field from “Edward Cicero” to “Ed Cicero”.
  3. Then click Save.
  4. You can confirm that the sample graduates name was updated by searching for them within the Help Desk or by scanning the graduate card in Ceremony Display mode.

Run the Director sample software

The Director sample software is set to Auto Advance, so graduate names will display and be announced instantly upon scanning.
  1. From the Director homepage, click Begin Ceremony Display.
  2. Scan a QR code from one of the sample graduate cards and the graduate’s name will appear on the Display Queue and be announced/displayed on the right side of the screen.
  3. Practice using all the sample graduate cards, including the ones that you modified in Help Desk, and the new “blank” graduate cards that had been added.
  4. Try adjusting the name advancing method by going to Settings and changing it to Manual Advance. With this setting, graduate names will enter into the Display Queue, and will need to be advanced manually using the arrow keys.
Follow the steps above as many times as desired and try experimenting with the different settings and features within the software. Familiarizing yourself with the Director technology is a great way to gain confidence and get the preparation needed before ceremony day.
